Aparna Raman's Essay
"Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations." —Bruntland Commission, 1987
Today, the world is moving towards sustainable developments and the trend of investing in sustainability will accelerate in core systems such as transportation, communication, manufacturing, IT and agriculture. Every human has something to contribute towards future sustainability. The user experience community can act as intelligent change agents. Today information is incessant, relentless and everywhere. As intelligent change agents, the user experience community can observe and act upon environmental needs and guide its activity towards achieving goals.
The number of technological innovations and disruptive innovations will grow in the coming years. The goal of the change agents is to channelize their design power and creativity into building meaningful products. For example: The coming generations would not know a world without internet and mobile phones, therefore building something that enhances and eases the usage for people will be the main concern. Context awareness (what human wants), perceptual interfaces and maintaining privacy for users have been defined as future of HCI, by John Canny, university of California, Berkeley. The block builders for this are the user experience community leaders.
"The User Experience Community has the power to prevent man from becoming zombies." With the development of methodology, knowledge and roles in the HCI communities, new heights can be reached. Designing for peak experience focus on the individual user, possibly extreme personas, focusing on the specific and eclectic - best for some will also help us develop something "out of the box". They can not only design exactly what the human wants, but also add value to the usage of it.
