World Usability Day in New York: What Usability Brings to the World
HFI's Jerome Nadel presents on the need to institutionalize usability
October 24th, 2005 – NEW YORK: Have you ever been frustrated by technology that doesn't work like it should? Maybe you even thought how to make it easier to use? On November 3rd, New York will join the world in celebrating usability – the field dedicated to making things easy.
World Usability Day is comprised of 75 events in more than 30 countries, collectively promoting the benefits of usability. Human Factors International (HFI) – the world's largest usability company – is proud to serve as Title Sponsor. HFI is also co-sponsoring several of the regional World Usability Day events, including New York, Chicago, Shanghai, China and Mumbai, India.
Usability must be "institutionalized" as a routine part of the development process
The theme of the New York event is "What Usability Brings to the World." This afternoon session will take place at the Chase Manhattan Plaza Conference Center (registration is required to attend this event – all members of the press are welcome). 2 of HFI's experts will be presenting:
Jerome Nadel, HFI's VP of Global Technical Process
The institutionalization of usability – how the field needs to change:
- Usability must be a sustained, routine, and necessary part of the business process. Executives, managers, and practitioners need a mature usability engineering capability with infrastructure, standards, training, and proper staffing.
Mona Patel, HFI Executive Director
What you don't know can hurt you – usability mistakes and their consequences:
- What can happen when usability is ignored? Nightmares, disasters and other stories of failure are lessons that should be learned once, not repeatedly. Once learned, they lead to success.
Ms. Patel will also lead a discussion titled "Convention of the minds: building a Certified Usability Analyst™ community." The focus will be on how to continue building momentum in the usability practitioner community.
