Those who do UX consulting must handle a variety of demands, including different clients, different user requirements and different business domains. Our Certified Analyst of the Month, Dinesh Joshi, has the breadth of experience and skill to meet those challenges.
Dinesh is a User Experience Consultant for ThoughtWorks, a software consulting company. ThoughtWorks is a Chicago-based company with twenty-nine offices in twelve countries.
Even though Dinesh is based in New Delhi, India, he primarily works for clients in Australia, the UK and the US. He took his CUA training in 2011 in Bangalore, India.
What is your role at ThoughtWorks?
I work as a UX consultant at ThoughtWorks. Typically we meet with a client to understand their problems, goals, and business objectives. We propose a solution which can give their customers/users good user experience so that our client can achieve their business goals.
Once started on the project, how do you work with the users?
There are typically two situations when I start any project. First, when there is some existing product/application which is not achieving its business goals. Or secondly, when there is a need to create something new. So in the first case, there is the need to do usability testing with real users to get real feedback and try to work on problem areas, rectify them, test them again, and launch. In the second case, there is the need to do user research, possibly with real users and stakeholders, to determine their goals/objectives and propose a design to fulfill them.
Do any projects come to mind that stand out as being unique and interesting?
Currently I am working on an application which will be used by back office people to manage their services. When people call the back office, the caller’s information will be captured using this application, and then processed and used to generate business leads. So the interesting part is that my first user is a customer calling and the second user is the customer service representative replying to him. The most challenging part was to place all the information in a manner such that the customer service representative can ask appropriate questions and the customer can easily answer all those questions.
You obviously work with a variety of companies and clients. Does that get a little challenging?
I think the most challenging part of any UX project is when you’re working without access to users. Without user access you can only make assumptions, where you never know how real users will use it.
Are most of the clients you work with readily accepting of the changes you want to make?
Yes, nowadays clients are aware of the importance of good user experience. Sometimes as a UX expert, I need to show them the ROI of having a UX expert on the project. It hardly matters if they want to build a backend application or public facing website; they definitely need UX expertise in the project team.
What do you find interesting about your work?
Different projects have different sets of challenges. For example, while creating designs for a mobile e-commerce website, you have to keep in mind those different users from different mobile phones with different demographics, with different goals, AND the high expectations from the client and only one design. That one design should fulfill all the users’ needs as well as the business needs.
What do you think was the most significant thing you learned from CUA training?
The most significant thing I learned from the HFI courses was the user's mental model. That was one of the discoveries which I found in the CUA course. Studying the user's mental model has been very helpful to me to understand what the users expect.
What things have you been able to apply from the training to your work?
I’ve been in the design field the last 10 years, but from getting CUA certified, I’ve learned things from the usability perspective. I learned that designs should be effective, easy to learn, and easy to use. So, now whatever I am doing, I just keep these things in mind. There is a significant difference in my work.
Any final thoughts?
I would say that HFI is doing really great work, especially for those who do not have a formal education in the human-computer interaction. People have an avenue to go and get educated and certified, and they can apply that knowledge in their projects. They can create value for themselves, their companies, and their clients.

In the course of its business, HFI may perform expert reviews, usability testing, and other consulting work where personal privacy is a concern. HFI believes in the importance of protecting personal information, and may use measures to provide this protection, including, but not limited to, using consent forms for participants or "dummy" test data.
Users browsing the Website without registering an account or affirmatively providing personally identifiable information to HFI do so anonymously. Otherwise, HFI may collect personally identifiable information from Users in a variety of ways. Personally identifiable information may include, without limitation, (i)contact data (such as a User’s name, mailing and e-mail addresses, and phone number); (ii)demographic data (such as a User’s zip code, age and income); (iii) financial information collected to process purchases made from HFI via the Website or otherwise (such as credit card, debit card or other payment information); (iv) other information requested during the account registration process; and (v) other information requested by our service vendors in order to provide their services. Finally, HFI may disclose or transfer personally identifiable information collected from Users in connection with or in contemplation of a sale of its assets or business or a merger, consolidation or other reorganization of its business.
If a User includes such User’s personally identifiable information as part of the User posting to the Website, such information may be made available to any parties using the Website. HFI does not edit or otherwise remove such information from User information before it is posted on the Website. If a User does not wish to have such User’s personally identifiable information made available in this manner, such User must remove any such information before posting. HFI is not liable for any damages caused or incurred due to personally identifiable information made available in the foregoing manners. For example, a User posts on an HFI-administered forum would be considered Personal Information as provided by User and subject to the terms of this section.
Information about Users that is maintained on HFI’s systems or those of its service providers is protected using industry standard security measures. However, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and HFI cannot guarantee that the information submitted to, maintained on or transmitted from its systems will be completely secure. HFI is not responsible for the circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures relating to the Website by any Users or third parties.
If a User’s personally identifiable information changes, or if a User no longer desires to receive non-account specific information from HFI, HFI will endeavor to provide a way to correct, update and/or remove that User’s previously-provided personal data. This can be done by emailing a request to HFI at hfi@humanfactors.com. Additionally, you may request access to the personally identifiable information as collected by HFI by sending a request to HFI as set forth above. Please note that in certain circumstances, HFI may not be able to completely remove a User’s information from its systems. For example, HFI may retain a User’s personal information for legitimate business purposes, if it may be necessary to prevent fraud or future abuse, for account recovery purposes, if required by law or as retained in HFI’s data backup systems or cached or archived pages. All retained personally identifiable information will continue to be subject to the terms of the Privacy Policy to which the User has previously agreed.

HFI reserves the right to cancel any course up to 14 (fourteen) days prior to the first day of the course. Registrants will be promptly notified and will receive a full refund or be transferred to the equivalent class of their choice within a 12-month period. HFI is not responsible for travel expenses or any costs that may be incurred as a result of cancellations.

There will be no audio or video recording allowed in class. Students who have any disability that might affect their performance in this class are encouraged to speak with the instructor at the beginning of the class.
The course and training materials and all other handouts provided by HFI during the course are published, copyrighted works proprietary and owned exclusively by HFI. The course participant does not acquire title nor ownership rights in any of these materials. Further the course participant agrees not to reproduce, modify, and/or convert to electronic format (i.e., softcopy) any of the materials received from or provided by HFI. The materials provided in the class are for the sole use of the class participant. HFI does not provide the materials in electronic format to the participants in public or onsite courses.
